Flowering annuals are the color machines in the landscape. Many, such as Marigolds, Allysum, and Snapdragons are sold by the flat. This is the most economical way to purchase flowering plants.

There are specialty annuals, which cost more, because of patents or propagation difficulties. New introductions make each planting season exciting. Unique qualities are bred into old-time favorites, like Petunias that bloom relentlessly because they don't set seed heads. Plants are discovered and cultivated for all to enjoy.

There is a tremendous interest in perennials. Gardeners are investing money, effort and careful thought into creating beautiful borders. It's best to do some planning before rushing into a perennial extravaganza.

1. Observations about planting environments are important; sun or shade, moist or dry soil, deer issues...
